My Random Thoughts and Experiences

Am I Black or Naija Caramel?

I went to this event on my school campus titled " Genocide in the black Community". The topic was about how 50% of black Americans commit abortions in their life time. And how most abortion clinics are targeted at them by locating their clinics in black neighborhoods. Now the crazy thing is that my school is like 95% white students with very very very few black students. My first thought was why would they want to hold such an event on a campus that the focus group is not even present. I mean the silly speaker went as far as saying "the most dangerous place a black baby can be its in its mothers womb". Now such statements like that is just extremely offensive, and then to air such in a predominantly white school...only fosters more prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination on the few black people in school. (in my head i am thinking ...now that hot hot oyinbo boy in my MBA class that i have been stalking would be thinking twice before making me his baby mama....thanks for ruining my dreams..lol..i kid oh.) Anyway trust me and my noise making... we went to the President of the school and filed a complaint, we'd see how that pans out.

I try to always distance myself from the 'black" stereotypes because frankly..we are different people.. my mentality is very different being raised in Nigeria where i am led to know and believe that i am the best of the best wherever I go..to someone being raised in America as a black person thinking they just might not be the best. (Slavery is a bastard men). However as much as i try to distance myself, my world around me here keeps reminding me I am black and that people would continue looking at me with "African American" stereotypes...till i prove them wrong. I remember my first few classes before i could establish Femi b's intelligence..everyone looked at me like i was an idiot, till i proved them wrong.

Am i wrong for trying to distance myself from the 'african americans" stereotype? I wonder if they had very apealling and nice sterotypes would I still want to be my own African, Nigerian, yoruba, girl and not be 'black". I keep wondering how my appearance can show i am nigerian without people hearing my accent...can i inscribe the Nigerian flag, coat of arms or map on my forehead? ) I am sure yardy would be proud of me..i just might be nigeria's sexy mascot..lol.

I saw this website that said stereotpes for nigerians included being .loud, aggressive, clever and starving. Now thats the funniest thing i have ever heard....to be all that but......then starving? men .. hunger dey catch some people sha.... very funny. I was expecting scamming to be part of the list ..but oh well better luck next time. lol

50% have abortions? I found that hard to believe, in fact I will say it is an out right lie.

As for stereotypes, I can understand why a black person with no roots in America might not want to be engulfed by the stereotypes that plague AA. But the key word is stereotypes as in lie, generalizations.

The same types that have African Americans not wanting to be associated with Africans because of the beliefe that they all live in the bush, walk around naked, all have HIV, war criminals, and so on.

(Arrogance is a stereotype that AA like to place on Nigerians BTW).

I think it is in every ones best interest to remember the source of these stereotypes for black people around the world originate from the same culprit, a very bias media controled by a particular culture.

The sad part is that black people buy into these stereotypes and help spread it.

So in short you are not wrong for wanting to distance your selves from these things but you should no that AA also want to distance themselves from those same stereotypes as I am sure Africans would like to distance themselves from theres.

The way I dismissed stereotypes was by walking up to another black person of a diffrent culture and saying hello.

You would be surprised what you learn when you communicate and hold all judgement.

Later.

I hate it when we black people are discriminated! And maybe more when NIGERIA IS ALWAYS CRITICIZED.
But well, we have to prove our sides right. That's what I have come to conclude and what you have rightly expressed.

Nigeria's SEXY MASCOT? Oya Femi, I want to encourage you to start working on it o. lol.
I could prove what is said about Nigerians wrong. Loud: I am Nigerian but not loud. Aggressive: Well, when my rights are taken from me. Clever: I guess I am. Starving: Femi, I am really starving. I need to get my breakfast. Later!

I felt that pull in my undergrad days as well... wanting to associate myself with their stereotypes when it worked and claiming my naija identity when I didn't want to(It didn't help that I could count all the caucasians in my school on my two hands...lol). As I matured though, I realised that I AM ME. Not Naijamerican, AfricanAmerican, or anything in between. I am Nigerian! Can I help the stereotypes all the time? No. All I CAN do is try and not play into those stereotypes.

clnmike said...

Yeah acting white is used by ignorant people who think that there is only one way to be black.

Funny thing I have seen many whites who dont act white.

You are black my dear.

Better to stay away from all stereotypes.

"...my mentality is very different being raised in Nigeria where i am led to know and believe that i am the best of the best wherever I go..." Maybe you're saying the truth. Maybe not.

My argument is... We're all racists, in one way or the other. You may have to consider the frenzy attached to the Obama candidacy for u to understand that many are voting for him just because of his skin, notwithstanding whether his promises, as articulated in his campaign, will be fulfilled.

All the same, the balck man still has a long way and a serious battle to fight... if the scourge of anti-black stereotypes must die. Can it die sef?!

Beautiful post, as usual.

but what does acting white mean? I just think saying acting "white" or acting "black" is just all wrong...my opinion

Oluwadee
I am not black pj, I am naija caramel..lol

ALoofa
YOu need to understand that we that were born in African countries and people that are born here in America have different mentalities. We might be similar in many things but things affect us very differently. Having no relative heritage or knowing their ancestors were slaves and being reminded everyday with racism that u are a 2nd class citizen..is not the "best" as i suggested in my post. I don't think we that grew up in Nigeria have to think we can't run for any office or worry about getting any form of discrimination because of the color of your skin. Imagine going to class and people thinking u are dumb, going to work people think you are lazy, driving and the cops think u are a criminal, etc..all this because of the color of your skin..thats damaging to generations of people. Things are changing oh and would definitely change especially with Obama..thats seriously "the audacity of hope". I don't have to worry about all those things in Nigeria because of the color of my skin..never.

I strongly feel that blacks are the also guilty of discrimination and stereotyping. In fact, we do it most, we spread it more than the white and we also have the mentality that we'll be discriminated against.

Discrimination is a universal phenomenon; it is not peculiar to Africans or the black world alone. Even among the whites they still discriminate. The solution is to sensitise people on the evil of this quagmire. We need to look beyond colour, background, nationality, disability, sex, etc. There is need to strategically manage diversity in a synergic manner.

As for abortions, I don't think the 50% report is right. Everything boils down to stereotyping and the 'sweeping approach' of analysing figures. Discrimination is a scourge we must all fight. We're all guilty of it and we must fight it.

The war against 'Racial stereotyping' remains a yet to be won battle and try as we may to discard the fact that it still exists, it sure does although its been less pronounced in recent times. I believe its gonna phase out totally in the nearest future, especially since one with a black skin is going to be the most powerful person in the world. Thumbs up for Barack Obama and I wish him goodluck as he takes his oath of office on January 20th.

I disagree on the abortion thing. Whites do it as much as blacks so whats the fuss about?

O girl, i never knew you were tripping for some 'oyinbo' guy o. ehn ehn. oh i remember u said 'kidding.' Take care now.

That is a ridiculous thing to say about black mothers. You should have given the White motherF***ker a 10 finger slap to prove him WRONG!(But you are on your own o! lol)
Seriously that is too cruel a thing to say!

Anyway, thank God we have madme a point with Obama's victory. I hope things change for the better.

Ha FEMI! Mama se birthday O so fun mi? O ma se o! I will catch you!Lol.

How far?

Unknown said...

Colour colour colour! Black or white? Which one am I sef? I would rather go for 'whitish black'Lol!

At least no one will discriminate against me anymore!

It is really funny when I think of all the noise about colours and races. I love colours and I still can't make out the sense in a white goat, nursing the idea of being superior to a black goat! It is really ridiculous! I thought 'goat na goat! lol!

May God help us!

Wait, was the speaker AA or Caucasian?

Anyway, what I try to do is really DISTANCE myself from that vicitm mentality. How in the world can we blame abortion clinics being located in black neighborhoods on the abortion rate among blacks? People need to take more responsibility and stop blaming everyone and anything for the choices they make. Genocide in the black community indeed. Some even blame the "white man" for killings in the black neighborhoods, they claim that guns are shelled out too easily in the black neighborhoods. But if we raise our kids to decipher right from wrong, even if a gun is shoved in their noses they'd know the right thing to do.

lol @ the womb being the most dangerous place 2 keep a black baby. That's funny in a bad way.

But I totally feel you on distancing yourself. I do too. We are the same, but different.

Sterotypes are terrible. However it is the "I'm Black" "I'm African" that really hurts us all. I am you and you are me. We are all many shades of brown. It's not what we are called but what we answer to that matters most. True African Americans may not know where in Africa their ancestors come from, And some of us Act a Damn fool; But some African Americans have really done well in making this country, this world a better place. Anywho, please checkout my blog. there is no commentary just facts. Everyday, there is a new fact.
